Blog Post 4: Week 4
The Open Education movement has been integral in giving a wide variety of online learners the chance to partake in receiving an education without being constricted by circumstances. An example of an open education source is MIT's OpenCourseWare Project. This tool along with others gives people who are motivated to learn and have access to technology the opportunity to gain a quality education for free. Another example of Open Education is Open Content. This tool is used by teachers especially to access downloadable and shareable content that is free of charge. The materials provided by Open Content resources are available to be reused, redistributed, revised and remixed. These sources of content are valuable to teachers and schools that do not have the funds to pay for premium learning materials. Open Source materials are another type of open education resource, as its source code is available for anyone to access. This means that the software itself can be edited and used in different learning situations. Typically, open source content is used to create new features or further develop the main program.
Open Education Resources (OER) are any type of text, media or other digital good that are open to the public for little to no cost, and are able to be altered in some way. These resources are still licensed but have fewer restrictions than content available online that is completely copyrighted. An interesting read, Goucher College Library outlines some of the advantages and disadvantages that OERs have in terms of student accessibility. One advantage that I highly agree with is its significant decrease in expense for students. As a college student, I find access to free learning materials very valuable in supplementing my studies. One disadvantage of Open Education Resources that resonates with me is the disconnect between students and teachers. A prime example of this is, again, MIT's OpenCourseWare Project. Online learners have access to courses and materials but do not have the ability to truly participate in the class in terms of receiving grades, sitting in on physical lectures and getting to interact with professors.
